Bio

Rashon is the first to admit he hasn’t had an easy life.

He has been in foster care since he was a toddler. He’s been in more foster homes than he can count and was separated from his brother.

But he found an outlet for his frustration: Poetry.

"I took a pencil after reading Langston Hughes and Maya Angelou poems and stuff and I said, ‘Hey maybe I can do this too’ because their (poetry) was coming from things that happened to them and anger that was inside of them," Rashon said.

"Over the past few years I’ve ended up writing over 200-something poems. And each time I write they get longer, deeper and more emotional," he said.

Rashon even worked up the courage to read his poems at an open microphone night at a local cafe recently. The response was so positive he sold several books of poetry he put together at home.

"I ended up selling them and got about $90," he said.

In his free time, Rashon plays basketball, football and paintball and participates in activities at his church. Though he is doing well in his current foster home, he is looking for a permanent family.

Rashon has advice for anyone looking to adopt a teenager in foster care: "I’d tell the parent just to give it a chance because...they’re actually great kids. They’re just emotionally disturbed from things that they’ve been through. And they just need a little bit of help and love."
